There are scores of individuals whom the public believes exemplify the greatest aspects of leadership. Most of these "leaders" are at the top of successful companies and have actually become their company's emblem -- not unlike the GEICO Gecko. Many of these individuals have tremendous visions and outstandingly powerful personalities -- but they are much more figureheads and living allegories than functioning Chief Executives in terms of the management of their respective companies.
The bulk of the task of actually managing a company's people, projects and processes falls to the other members of the elite C-Suite involved in operations, marketing and (especially recently) technology. In fact, these uncelebrated heroes (and heroines) are usually stuck in the unenviable position of having to repress the Big Chief's exaggerations, overstatements, and insulting or inflammatory comments -- or , in the event that the Chief has already made his "pronouncements" -- then doing the best that they can at damage control and some uncomfortable backpedaling.
