"Ode To Billie Joe" - Amazing Performance By Tom Wompat

The Bobby Gentry was southern, sultry and haunting. But Tom Wopat (formerly of Dukes Of Hazzard) and on Braodway with Bernadette Peters in "Annie Get Your Gun" is beyond seductive with his rich, hoodoo, smoldering, deep-fried version of this classic. You've simply got to hear it. When you click on Tom's performance, it'll take you back into the deep southern bayou... his voice is rich and his delivery is brilliantly stoic. Hearing this song, as I did, for the first time on NPR, I was just hypnotized -- as if I could hear the steamy sounds of the woods, the creek and cottonmouth's sibilant hissing. Dynamite.
